It's no Harvard, but the school has a good name, both in the US and internationally. Absolutely no school spirit when it comes to sports. Students here are more proud of having the name on their resumes than waving it during a basketball game. The professors have high expectations for the students, but that doesn't justify the little effort they put into making sure students understand everything. Be prepared to teach yourself a lot. Professors are helpful when it comes to applying what's in the book to the real world. They are excellent in their respective fields, unfortunately teaching isn't one of those fields. Like most schools, you get what you put into it, but I think this applies the most to GW. You determine how successful you're going to be; nobody's going to hold your hand. Don't expect a traditional college experience. A lot of people are walking around in business suits. More emphasis is put on getting a job than learning. Students are very focused on careers and networking, the environment is very competitive. Sometimes you will find yourself competing with your classmates. Some professors with connections will offer the top student an internship at whatever organization he/she works for, or runs as is the case with a few professors I've met. Your grade will play a big role in getting that spot, but you have to know a lot about that particular subject to really stand out. Be careful not to get carried away with the name. Like I said, it's no Harvard. Unless you excel here, the name will not do much for you. The school is witnessing a huge transformation. New deans were appointed; around half a billion dollars in new buildings/renovations planned/started. The school of engineering retired most of it's faculty and is currently in the process of recruiting top-notch professors. The school of business just hired a new dean who announced his goal of raising the school's rankings up to the level of our law school, which is 20, within the next 7 years. Again we see the emphasis on jobs here. Although schools care very much about rankings, the administration should not publicly admit it, as rankings "do not define the quality of a school." GWU is great, but it really suits a minority. Make sure the culture suits you, because that is what turns a lot of people away.
